Introduction: Emily Canaday

Introduction

Hello! As you can see, my name is Emily. I am originally from Golden, Colorado and am currently a Senior studying Chemical Engineering (yes, I know I am crazy). I enjoy quite a few things..so please venture with me below to discover just a few of them!

Normal Selfie taken by me in Novermber 2014.

This is my best friend, Erin Lowdon. She is a red-headed beauty and visits me in Norman every semester. We went to high school together, but we actually didn't start truly hanging out until after we had graduated. Funny how that works sometimes. Anyways, she is one of the most caring and generous people I know and I am so thankful to have her as a friend.

I love, love, love little kids. This is Ashlyn and she is my friend’s daughter. She thinks I am super cool because I let her wear my tiara (see below for further information on that). We are supposed to have a sleepover sometime this semester and I am probably more excited than she is.

Okay, so this is the tiara I was talking about. I have sort of been over-involved during my college career. I was President of First Year Engineers’ Club my freshman year, Vice President of Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and Fall Festival Chair for Engineers’ Club my sophomore year, junior year I was President of SWE and a recruiter for the College of Engineering, and my senior year I have played the role of Engineering Queen..hence the tiara. Also, throughout almost all of my college career I have been a Dean’s Leadership Council Mentor and either an Office Assistant (OA) or Supervisor of the OAs for the Student Learning Center. So..yeah. I have sort of been involved quite a bit and I think this Queen thing will be my last big hoorah. It sure has helped me learn a lot!

This was me playing queen during the Homecoming parade. Engineering Queen and King are in charge of rallying the troops to build the engineering float (we don’t have required hours like a lot of Greek life does). Not to brag, but the engineering floats usually always have a moving part and they win overall in the small group.

We had a moving train on ours this year which was super awesome.

Our awesome float..the book is 10 feet tall for reference. Taken in October 2014

It is always very easy to talk about yourself, so I am excited to "meet" everyone else!

  1. Emily, that is awesome that you are from Colorado! I love Colorado; I am actually flying into Denver tomorrow! That is so great that you are able to see your best friend in Norman every semester! I am from California so I also have a long distance best friend. It is also very cool that you are so involved at OU and in your major!

  2. Wow Emily, you are certainly an overachiever! I have always heard such amazing things about the Engineer's Ball, that's so cool that you're the Queen! I babysat two adorable girls all summer, so I agree hanging out with kids is the best. I love the cute little explanations you put for each of your photos, "Normal Selfie" and "Queen Selfie" made me laugh.

  3. Man, Emily, you sound like a busy person! Chemical engineering must be tough. I know a lot of people who started out with that major and then changed down the road. I myself stared out in meteorology, so I know the kinds of classes that you take are super hard! It’s great that you and your best friend are able to maintain such a great connection even though you live far away from each other! I hope the rest of your semester is awesome and that you love whatever job you receive after graduation.

  4. I am a math and science guy myself, however, I do agree with you that you are crazy for being a chemical engineer. I do not have a specific reason, but chemistry is my least favorite class topic in the world. I would even rather take physics courses over chemistry. Chemistry seems to have a knack for making my blood boil. It is always interesting to see how involved people are on camps, and it is clear that you took that to the next level, good for you. It seems like you are having I a good time here at OU and I wish you the best of luck with everything.

  5. With complete knowledge of how creepy I may sound: I know you!
You were actually there when I decided to become an engineer, even though you (and even I) had no idea that such a crazy choice was going to be made at the time.
You, and several other girls have were there for High School Girl's Day my senior year, as well as Women's Welcome and have helped me decide that this is the best path for me. I have always "known" you from afar, through different events and organizations... Ironic that we "meet" online (ha ha). It is really cool to see a familiar face, however weird of a situation this is, and nice to get to know a little about you.

  6. And here I am finally getting to your Introduction, Emily... but I had fun with the billiard cat in your blog yesterday as you know already! And of course I LOVE the tiara!!! You will feel right at home with all the queens and other royalty of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata... and the epics are FULL of royalty! Although those ladies were not engineers too, ha ha. I hope you will enjoy the class! :-)

  7. Emily Canaday! Hey! Gosh, you're the coolest. You do so much! You make a great engineering queen, and it was really fun helping build the float with you this year. And you're from Colorado, which makes you even cooler. I worked in Golden last summer, and I loved it there. I look forward to having a class with you, and I hope you have a great semester!

  8. Hey Emily! Let me just say, wow! You sure spent your four years well and are quite accomplished. Every time I hear of engineering majors, I give them an applause because I've seen what being an engineering major does to you (having a roommate that has a biochemical engineer major). But thats so cool that you were crowned queen! I've always wanted to meet the Queen, and now I suppose I can kind-of say I have!

  9. Hi Emily! Wow, I am really impressed by all of your activities and accomplishments these last four years! I'm sure you're constantly busy with something! I think "Engineering Queen" is one of the coolest titles I've ever heard. It's cool that you're from Golden. I went to Golden once and it was a very nice town. I lived in Fruita, a little town in western Colorado, for eleven years. I miss the mountains so much. I hope you have a good rest of your semester!

  10. Emily, I tried to get involved and thought I never had enough time to do anything as a Letters major. I was IFC VP of Recruitment this past year and i was completely overwhelmed between that and school. Extremely impressive how you have been able to be involved so much within the engineering programs while being a chemical engineering major as well. Congratulations to you on making it through the engineering college as a senior and accomplishing so much at OU.

  11. I can’t imagine what your weekly calendar must look like! Congrats on being named Engineering Queen. I find it admirable that you have managed to reach out to your friend’s daughter and bond with her. As a fellow senior, I have to ask what your plans are post-graduation. My younger sister is an engineering student as well and she tells me that she is one of very few females in all of her classes. I think it’s awesome that you have excelled in an area where so few women dare to venture.

  12. Hi! You are so incredible! That is definitely a lot of participation in extracurriculars! Engineering sounds quite difficult, though I'm an English major so of course it's far out of my league. Nevertheless, your involvement is very inspiring, and I'm sure little Ashlyn finds you an inspiring role model. The engineering float seems amazing! And that 10 foot tall book is insane. I'm looking forward to reading more about you and your work in the class!

  13. Hi Emily!
I really like how you broke up the topics you talked about with a picture! It made it really easy to read! Wow! You have been so busy since you came to OU. That is awesome! My mom is an electrical engineer so I can appreciate all the hard work it takes to accomplish a degree in that field. I thought it was really cool that you mentioned that your float has a moving part! That is so engineer-like, always building something. I love little kids too! I have a few friends with kids too, and every time I go home and hangout with them I feel more excited about it also! Good luck with finishing your major and all of your activities. You are going to have one AWESOME resume!

  14. Hey Emily, nice to see you! I think it’s awesome that you’re from Colorado. I have yet to visit there but I have always been wanting to. One of my roommates is a chemical engineering major and he’s always complaining about how hard some of the classes are. He’s also pretty smart so I guess that works out for him. Good luck with all your classes!

  15. Hey Emily! First off, I am really jealous that you are from Colorado. CO is one of my favorite places to be, and I go to Colorado Springs just about every spring break! Except this one, because I am in India. But I got to go over winter break, so I was happy. That is really cool how you are involved in so many things on campus. I know from experience that it is stressful, but you have a lot to pick from when it comes to your resume! But anyways, congrats on being a senior, and I hope your last semester here at OU is going well!

  16. Hey, Emily. That’s cool you’re a ChemE. I think I’ve seen you around the engineering quad and E club events before. I’ve been wanting to visit Colorado for some time now. Maybe I can try and go this summer. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the semester and congrats on almost being done with school.

  17. Hey Emily! My best friend is also an engineering major but she graduated with her masters already. You seem to be active in a lot of clubs and thats pretty cool! This is my senior year too and my last semester. It's bittersweet but I'm so glad to be done with school. So you were voted for engineering queen? That is pretty cool. My friend was voted as queen as well but I think that was a few years back.

Who was your friend? I'm just curious if I know her.

  20. Hi there!
The semester is nearly over and this is my first time seeing your blog! I think your theme is actually my favorite so far. It’s bright! Wow, you really were not kidding about being involved. It sounds like you are pretty passionate about your degree though, which is super important if you want to be happy and satisfied. Congrats on being so close to graduating; you must be so excited! Also, good job on breaking down those barriers. We need more women in the sciences!

  21. Hey Emily!

I decided to look at storytelling and introductions this week that I've never commented on, and I noticed I hadn't commented on yours yet! It's nice to "meet" you :)

I think it's awesome that you're a chemical engineering major--you must have a brilliant mind. That is such a useful degree. To be able to wrap your mind around such a discipline is truly a talent. Not to mention all of your lovely titles and that gorgeous tiara! Congratulations on your accomplishments! I really admire your involvement in engineering at OU. I have no doubts that you will go far after you graduate, and I wish you the best of luck!

That float was AWESOME by the way!
Good luck on finals and have a wonderful Summer!

  22. Hey Emily,
I can’t believe I am just being paired up with you now and we only have 2 weeks left of the semester. That is so awesome that you were queen of the parade. Funny story, I actually have a picture of my old roommate on that float when it was sitting in the grass by Devon after the homecoming football game! Good luck with the engineering. I’m sure that you will be great!

  23. Wow! Seems like you have definitely made the most out of your experience here at OU. All of your accomplishments with joining clubs and involvement are very impressive. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments. They will definitely be worth it in the long run even though I’m sure you’re super busy. It’s nice to meet you and I hope the rest of your time here is great!

  24. Hi Emily.
I think it is really cool how involved you've been throughout your college experience. All of the clubs and societies that you have been involved with will definitely look great on your resume. Perhaps that is some sort of consolation for all your hard work and time. I am sure you will make a great Engineer. Good luck with what’s left of the semester!

  26. Hello Emily! Nice to meet you! Wow, chemical engineering sounds like a lot tougher major than my psychology degree, and I am also graduating in May - congratulations! we're almost there! I also love kids and during the summertime I have sleepovers with my friends two little kids, which of course she loves getting a break lol and I love having them over.
